What is TMS?

Magnetic pulses that rewire depression — without medication

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain regions that control mood. Evolve uses BrainsWay Deep TMS — the most advanced, deepest-reaching TMS technology FDA-cleared for depression.

Deep TMS reaches deeper brain structures than standard TMS, which is why it consistently outperforms earlier generations in clinical trials. The treatment is done while you're awake and alert — you can drive yourself to and from appointments.

How TMS treatment works

A typical TMS course is 20–36 sessions over 4–6 weeks, with most patients completing 5 sessions per week. Here's what to expect.

1

Evaluation

A psychiatric provider evaluates your history, prior treatments, and current symptoms to confirm you're a TMS candidate.

2

Mapping Session

Your first TMS visit is a "mapping" session to calibrate the device to your specific brain anatomy and determine optimal settings.

3

Treatment Sessions

36-minute sessions, 5x/week for 4–6 weeks. You sit comfortably, remain awake, and can return to normal activity immediately after.

4

Response & Maintenance

Most patients see improvement by week 3–4. After the initial course, maintenance sessions keep results lasting.

Insurance Coverage

Most major insurance plans cover TMS

TMS is covered by most major insurance plans for patients with treatment-resistant depression — meaning you've tried at least 2 antidepressants at adequate doses without sufficient response.

Our team handles prior authorization and insurance verification on your behalf. Call us or submit a new patient request and we'll check your benefits before your first appointment.

FAQ

Common questions about TMS

Does TMS hurt? +
TMS is generally well-tolerated. Most patients feel a tapping or clicking sensation on their scalp during treatment. Some experience mild scalp discomfort or headache, especially in the first week. This typically resolves as treatment continues. There is no pain inside the skull or brain.
How long until I feel results? +
Most patients begin noticing improvement between week 3 and week 4 of treatment. However, the full effect often continues to build for several weeks after the treatment course ends. Don't be discouraged if you don't notice changes in the first two weeks.
Can I work and drive during TMS? +
Yes. Unlike ECT (electroconvulsive therapy), TMS requires no sedation or anesthesia. You are fully awake during sessions and can drive yourself to appointments, go to work immediately after, and continue all normal daily activities throughout your course of treatment.
How is BrainsWay Deep TMS different from standard TMS? +
Standard TMS coils only reach the surface of the brain (about 0.7cm deep). BrainsWay's H-coil technology reaches significantly deeper brain structures (up to 3.2cm) involved in mood regulation, including the bilateral prefrontal cortex and limbic regions. Clinical trials show Deep TMS achieves higher remission rates than standard TMS.
Do results last after the treatment course ends? +
Yes — TMS results are durable. Studies show most responders maintain improvement for 12 months or longer. If symptoms return, a shorter "booster" course of TMS can typically restore the response quickly. Many patients schedule periodic maintenance sessions proactively.
What are TMS's FDA clearances? +
BrainsWay Deep TMS is FDA-cleared for: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Anxious Depression, and Smoking Cessation. Evolve primarily uses TMS for depression and OCD. Ask your provider whether TMS might be appropriate for your specific situation.
Who is NOT a good candidate for TMS? +
TMS is not appropriate for patients with implanted metal devices in or near the head (pacemakers, cochlear implants, metal plates), active seizure disorders, or certain other medical conditions. Pregnancy is a relative contraindication. Your provider will do a full safety screening before recommending TMS.
